From Career Gap to Data Analyst at Meesho: How Newton School Helped Saran Chose Ethics and Build a Career
Career gaps, failed attempts, and ethical dilemmas can often derail confidence — especially in a competitive job market. Saran Arul Yogan’s journey is a powerful example of how choosing the right guidance and staying true to one’s values can lead to long-term success.
Today, Saran Arul Yogan works as a Data Analyst at Meesho. His journey with Newton School helped him overcome years of uncertainty, bridge skill gaps, and secure a role without compromising on integrity.
Career Gaps, Civil Services, and a Difficult Reality Check
After completing college, Saran’s father encouraged him to prepare for the Civil Services Examination. With a clear plan, Saran dedicated three years to preparation. However, once this self-imposed timeline ended, he knew it was time to explore alternate career opportunities.
Saran then enrolled in a Full Stack Development course in Chennai. While the course content was good, it lacked one critical component — placement support. For the next six months, Saran struggled independently to secure a job as a frontend or backend developer, without success.
Facing Unethical Advice from Placement Providers
During his job search, Saran reached out to multiple placement providers. To his shock, several advised him to create fake experience certificates to cover the four-year gap spent preparing for civil services.
This advice conflicted completely with Saran’s personal values and ethics. Uncomfortable with the idea and unsure of the next step, he sought a more honest and sustainable path forward.
Discovering Newton School: A Turning Point
A close friend, Saravana, referred Saran to Newton School. When Saran consulted the Newton School team and shared his concerns about career gaps, the response was clear and reassuring:
Fake experience certificates were not required.
This reassurance became a game-changing moment in Saran’s life. For the first time, he found a platform that focused on skills, preparation, and interviews — not shortcuts. Soon after, Saran decided to join Newton School.
Overcoming Technical Challenges with Mentor Support
Like many learners transitioning into data roles, Saran initially found advanced SQL topics challenging — especially CTEs, window functions, and complex queries.
During these difficult moments, his mentor Mohit played a crucial role. Whenever Saran felt demotivated, Mohit consistently encouraged him with a simple but powerful mindset:
“Stay calm. We can do this.”
This continuous emotional and technical support helped Saran push through self-doubt and steadily improve.
Grooming for Placements and Interview Readiness
Once Saran completed the Data Analyst phase modules, he entered the placement grooming stage, where he worked closely with his groomer, Harshit.
During grooming, Saran received structured preparation across:
- Excel
- SQL
- Power BI
- Interview-style problem-solving
- Clear answer structuring
These sessions ensured that Saran was not only technically prepared but also interview-ready.
Cracking the Meesho Interview
Saran’s preparation paid off during the Meesho interview process, where he encountered complex technical rounds involving:
Multiple CTEs
Subqueries
Advanced SQL logic
With the guidance and practice he received from Mohit and Harshit, Saran was able to approach these problems calmly and solve them efficiently — something that once felt overwhelming.
